30 Days of Blogging - Day Twelve
Back in the early eighties I used to keep a scrapbook, into which I'd put mementos and little things that amused me - notes from my (then ) husband, newspaper articles about upcoming Star Trek movies, movie ticket stubs, cartoons that I had particularly enjoyed etc. There's also a smattering of poetry from other people, mainly those attending the Creative Writing workshop that I went to in 1981 -1982.

I thought I'd share this poem that I re-discovered in my old scrapbook tonight. I don't know the author's name as it was cut off the stencil, but I liked it enough to keep it all these years. I've always had a fondness for black and white cats - my Collingwood cats.

this cat

this black and white cat
is the epitome of what a
cat should be

sleek, trim and carries
itself with great dignity.

visits are on a daily basis
from the house across the
street.

noting his arrival
large numbers of mynah birds
gather.
swooping inches above his head
they are raucous in their
denouncement

he ignores such treatment
just goes about the business
of catching lizards.

moving amongst the greenery
his periscope tail
is a giveaway.

Looking back through old diaries and scrapbooks can be such a window in to another life almost.

That's just what it seemed like, too. I'd forgotten about the massive crush I used to have on one of our fast bowlers but there were all the newspaper clippings.

Periscope tail ... LOVE that description! I'll be singing Yellow Submarine all day now and picturing a cat.

It's so evocative, isn't it?!

When you see that periscope tail you wonder ... what have you been up too ;)

My journal-keeping is soooo intermittent, but I do enjoy digging through my box file of Stuff I Cannot Throw Away from time to time.

I have just been visiting my sister, and she has cats. Would it be okay if I forwarded her a copy of this poem? I suspect she will approve.

By all means onforward; I get so much enjoyment out of reading it and I'd love to think that others enjoyed it too. I just wish I had kept the author's name attached, so she could be credited.

Thanks - duly forwarded.
