Still faffing about with the new tv. Hooked up my dvd player only to find that because it's quite old, and not HD, the picture quality on the large screen tv was pretty bad, which meant a new player was in order. And if I was going to get a new player anyway, decided on a blu-ray rather than just dvd. Then I discovered that none of the shops openly sell region-free players, and I had to get one online. It arrived two weekends back and I thought I had it set up properly but when I hooked it to my receiver and turned on the tv, there was nothing. Frustration! I'm not good with this sort of stuff and it always leaves me feeling anxious when I can't get something to work straight off. Had another go at it today; this time I plugged the HDMI cable straight into the tv instead of into the receiver first, and now I have a good picture. Unfortunately it means that the sound no longer runs through my surround sound system so it's not ideal... will have to try a few more configurations and see what works.

Of course I had to try an overseas import disc, just to make sure it really was region-free, and ended up watching episode one of The Sentinel.

This afternoon involved a trip to the cinema to see Monty Python Live (Mostly) which was a total blast. It was filmed in the O2 arena earlier this year and the boys did all of their most famous sketches as well as a couple I didn't remember at all. Brilliant stuff, just brilliant, at one time I was crying with laughter; even when you know what the joke is, it's still such funny, funny stuff. They're all looking old, (but aren't we all) and on a couple of occasions one or other of them would forget their lines, or just crack up laughing... made it all seem more real, somehow.

Surprisingly the theatre was empty when we arrived; shortly afterwards another two people showed up but that was it - the four of us had the theatre to ourselves. Shame, really, as it would have been great to be surrounded by lots of people all enjoying it as much as we were.

I know what you're going through...I'm technologically challenged when hooking up things. I was so proud when I got my cheap DVD player that I bought a year and a half ago hooked up for the bedroom. Long story...I disconnected the Telly there and lost the power cable, so the DVD player sat.

I still can't figure out how to run the television through the DVD surround sound in the living room. DVD's yes, but the Telly is supposed to be able to do that too. Oh well at least it works. When I had the cable television installed, the tech did all the hook ups for me. I should take a photo of it just in case.

Enjoy the new system and blue ray. My tv is supposed to be high def but it's one of the older ones so blue ray wouldn't really do anything ...sticking with my DVD player that's at least 10 years old now...if not more.

It's horrible, isn't it, when faced with new tech and it's a puzzle. The TV was the thing I struggled with when I bought my surround sound, too - everything else worked, just had no sound from the tv. Had to get my son to sort that out, back then. Might need him again this time too. :-(

At least you have your son to help you sort things out. I only have me and the cats....and they're no help.

That would be really hard. I hate asking Jay and I put it off until I've tried everything I can think of (like the time I managed to change my PC's screen settings to black - now that was fun!)but I know he'll come over if I ask. I'd just rather do it myself if I can.

Settings I can usually figure out, but it's the wires and what goes where that confound me. Although thanks to bluemeanybeany, I learned to do something new on the computer.

voila: Minnie says 'hello'

Ziggy would wave back but he's too busy knocking things off the kitchen shelves.

I have not turned the television on since we moved, and that's three weeks ago. I let the boys wire the thing up, because it matters to them, and they took handfuls of connecting wires from the pile and connected it all as they saw fit.

Thing is, I label all my wires and plugs with little images and notes ('router: do not turn off' and 'giant light' and 'plugs into yellow box'), and they didn't use any of those and now I have to work out what they all are by pulling things out and seeing what stops working.

Mothy Python! How brilliant! I knew that it had been filmed and broadcast, but I totally forgot about trying to go and see it. Four people? Aww! A private performance, though, how cool :)

If my TV goes on it's usually on a Saturday night or a Sunday for the V8s, and in between I don't even think about it. When I bought a new entertainment unit (in anticipation of the new, bigger tv arriving) before pulling everything apart to move it I took photos of the way everything connected, and drew a diagram as well, but that was when I didn't have a digital tv and everything ran through the set top box into the receiver. So now it's back to trial and error.

Why don't men think of that when they put things together? They trust that the fact of their gender will enable them to put things together instinctively. Who needs instructions? *g*

I guess you could look at today's movie as a private performance *g*. I thought I'd have trouble getting tickets to be honest but not so.

*g* I figured it was easier than trying to remember - there was a tv, a set top box, dvd player, media centre, cd player, amplifier, two subwoofers and six other speakers all to be wired up. Without the photos and diagram I'd have taken all day and still not got it right.

Have you got everything wired up to the correct scart sockets because if not then certain things won't work xx

That's half the problem, I wouldn't have a bloody clue! It's trial and error now, until I get the sound working the way it's supposed to (it was, but adding the blu ray player upset things). Anyway, weekend is over so it can wait now until next Saturday.

I leave all the wiring up to the experts as I wouldn't know one end from the other. Years ago, before DVDs, I managed to hook up two VCRs so I could copy some tapes and I had bits of paper taped to each cable showing where it had to go. Aaah! The good old days before everything got so bloody complicated.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show, even with only four people there. Coincidence? On Facebook I found that my niece and her husband went to see that with a mostly empty theatre. Will email you with photos to see if you all were there at the same time.

It IS complicated, and leaves me feeling anxious, but it's just a matter of trial and error now, and having both time and patience to fiddle with it.

Thanks for the photos, definitely not the same session as I'd surely have remembered a guy in a Dr Who hoodie!

I have to admit to leaving all such business to MG which is probably a mistake but there you go. *g* He really loves doing that sort of thing and I don't.

He just bought more Y connectors so the stereo won't translate his mono recordings when he plays them on his record player... no, I dunno either.

I hope you get it all sorted soon. ♥

Oh, right, that's... I have no clue. None.
Sooner or later I'll figure it out, it's just putting the time in really to try all possible combinations. I'll get there.
