After all these years.
I received a recall notice in the mail for my car today. Car is nearly seven years old (still under warranty for another three weeks, too, howzat for a deal) and they've just discovered a possible problem with a weld that could cause the headlights to fail - I guess it can take that long for the weld to weaken enough so that problems become evident.

And on the subject of my car, remember a while back when someone keyed it in the carpark? Finally I have the impetus to get the damage repaired. Most days my car just sits in my carport - seriously, the last time I put petrol in it was the 29th June, I kid you not - but the one day, the ONE day that I was running late to work so drove to the bus stop, someone ran into my car in the car park. No dents, just scraped duco and a rub-mark on my alloy wheel, which fortunately came off with a bit of wheel polish. At least she had the decency to leave her details, and I was able to call her to discuss.

So this propelled me at last to the smash repairers, to see about getting car fixed. Thing is, the damage from the lady hitting my car is on the same panels that were keyed, and as repairing the key scratch means respraying the whole panel(s) the other damage will be repaired at the same time. I'll have to pay the excess for the damage but my no-claim bonus is protected so it won't put my policy premium up too much next year. And I'm taking advantage of my car being at the repairers anyway to get the rear spoiler resprayed, as it was looking rather faded. The big date is set for the 17th September and it will be off the road until the 19th - but as I don't normally drive it during the week that's perfectly fine by me.

Oooh, wow. Yeah, I suppose weakening welds are not going to become obvious in the first few months.

Bummer on the car bump, but excellent that everything fits together so neatly. Shiny new (well, newly-done) car will be shiny!

Shiny will be nice - rear spoiler has gone really dull from sitting in the sunlight all day and I'm looking forward to getting it all nice and new-looking again. Yet another reason why I walk to the bus stop now.

Wow - seven years later... which presumably means that some people's have started to go, and that's how they noticed it...? Anyway - yeay synchronicity! *g*

According to the letter, the weld has been discovered to weaken over time, so yeah one of those things that isn't instantly discoverable. Pretty neat, really, to think they'd recall after all these years and not just chalk it up to normal wear and tear.
