Please Explain...

Where does the expression "the living daylights" come from? Eg "I nearly had an accident, it scared the living daylights out of me." What, exactly, is a living daylight? Why is it a desirable thing? As opposed to a nightlight, or even a deceased daylight. This is starting to sound like a Monty Python sketch, I'll be banging a parrot on the table in a moment.
