It's a terrible thing, the injuries at Bathurst, and I feel for the families of the two men. There was talk on the news tonight that CAMS will be looking at ways to make the track safer. I guess they could always install speed bumps. But seriously, there hasn't been a fatality at the Mountain for 20 years now (that I can recall - someone correct me if I'm wrong!). A friend suggested that the only way to reduce the accident toll there would be to cancel the supporting events and leave the racing to the professional drivers in the V8 Supercars. I disagree that that's a step in the right direction, though. If anything, the safety of the cars themselves could be looked at. But there's still not much protection you can expect when someone T-bones you at 250km/h. There is a certain degree of risk inherent in throwing a tin box on wheels around a mountainside at maximum throttle surrounded by idiots intent on occupying your piece of tarmac, and all drivers accept that before donning the nomex.
