Tripping the Light Fantastic

I've finally figured out the mysteries of my rear sensor light. I think.
Every so often it decides not to turn itself on as I come downstairs. I have to actually turn it off then on again to make it work - but then it won't turn itself off. So I have to unplug it, and leave it unplugged for a day or so, then plug it back in, switch off, switch on, run upstairs and turn off the outside switch, and about five minutes later the sensor light turns itself off. Usually.
It's still a mystery, though, as to why it decides to carry on like this in the first place. It usually works for about a week before getting termperamental again.
The first time I ran the dishwasher here it tripped the safety switch but it hasn't happened since.
