Trying hard not to be a whiny entitled fanbrat
I don't read WIPs any more; been caught out too many times by an incomplete story that is eventually discontinued. But there's one that might just make me break my golden rule. I've read a previous fic by this author and it was gorgeous! Now she's slowly posting a new epic, and every weekend she adds at least one chapter. She's just posted chapter 46 of 56 but I don't dare hope that the chapter count means it really is finished. I'll just have to be patient, I guess. But it's HARD!

It's so cold tonight, real heater weather. Outside the wind is howling and it feels as though it's blowing off snow, it's that bitter. Winter is coming! *g* *throws direwolf pelt over bed*

On holidays from the end of this week, can't wait. I'm thinking I might repaint my loungeroom over the weekend; been playing around with colours on a painting website - one of the ones where you upload a photo of the room and you can change the colours with a mouse click - and I'm thinking maybe a dusty green. With the right accents it would look warm in winter but also cool in the warmer months. Off to fiddle with a few more colours now.

I don't read WiPs either. I note the stories that are nearing their end and then come back when they're really completed.

I've subscribed to this one on AO3 and I get an email every time it's updated. I'll wait until it's finished before I actually go near it :-)

I so know what you mean.
And I'm with you on that specific fic (although, the chaptersize has increased in between, but I hope it now stays with 56) *g*
Have fun on your holidays and with the repainting (hope you post pics afterwards) :)

Hehe, and do you know how odd it feels hearing you talking about winter and snow when summer is here around the corner ;)

So you're waiting too? Nice to know I'm not alone! SO tempting; her previous epic was just wonderful but I'm being strong... I didn't notice that the chapter size had increased along the way; I hope that doesn't happen again.

I know what you mean about the seasons, it always strikes me as weird when northern hemisphere people talk about the heat at this time of year.

I don't read them any more either, which is part of my guilt about my WIP series.

I'm trying to imagine it being really cold in Australia.

I always find green such a peaceful grounding colour.

But that's the thing, I don't think you need to feel guilty about it. For anyone to expect you to finish them, well, then they're just being the whiny entitled fanbrat that my entry title referred to. Things happen. Real life happens. Changes of direction / lack of interest happens. You don't owe anyone a story.

You know the worst one ever, though? The author died, and her beta (co-author? not sure really) posted what they already had. That comprised an incredibly long, plotty two-part fic which ended really abruptly, with no chance of it ever being finished ever.
Except that the author, before she passed away, had written a little Christmas-themed epilogue which will forever leave me wondering how she got the characters from Point B to Point C.
Still and all, I'm glad I read it, and I'd have done so even if I'd known going in that I wouldn't get a resolution. It was that good.

I think I feel bad about it because I don't like to read WIPs myself and for me, at least, it's *never* a planned thing, I always post *complete* stories... and then someone says "so what happened after that?" and next thing I know I'm thinking "yeah, what did happen?" and I have a series of stories on my hands rather than a multi-chapter single story.

And the ridiculous thing is that yeah, no one with any sense really *expects* you to write a sequel story but once you do then they do have an expectation that you'll keep going.

I've started to do better at saying "no, I'm sorry, it's a one-off and I can't promise a sequel" but once my stupid brain writes one then... yeah. *headdesk*

We should be happy to get what we're given, shouldn't we? *g* This "expectations" business; well, no-one has the right to have any expectations at all. You're not getting paid for it after all. We humans are an illogical bunch though.

Highly illogical. :D

I have some old stories up at the Pit of Voles (it was that particular fandom's archive of choice) and I'll still occasionally get a message from there saying "when are you going to write the next bit?" and NONE of those stories are WIPs or even in series.
