Digging it
So in my last post I mentioned the trench that had been dug across the front of my house - this is how it looked -

Taken from my driveway, 5.30am yesterday morning. And then, from across the street -

Explains why it was difficult to get my car out!

When I got home from work last night the crew was working madly to get it all filled in; it's now a wide gash in the asphalt filled with lumpy soil and I'm not certain that it's stable enough to drive over. Hopefully they'll finish it off properly soon.

That's definitely an inconveniently sized/placed trench - I hope they at least gave you some warning! Did they even put a cover over it so that you could drive over when they weren't working? Cos gosh...

No cover, just a dirty great hole. And no prior warning. We did get a generic warning about roadworks and possible disruption but I'd have appreciated a warning that my driveway would be blocked; I'd have left my car at my sister's if I'd known.

Wow. At least they are working a LOT faster than construction stuff happens in my town. When they dig things up here, they STAY dug up for weeks.

I don't think they'd be game to leave it that long, there'd be a riot. They have to do the whole street; I was just the unlucky first.

If they did that here they would have to lay metal plates over it while they weren't working so you could drive over it.

I hope they fix it for you soon.

They put a metal plate over the hole in front of my neighbour's place, for the weekend, after roughly back-filling the hole in front of mine on Friday night. It would have been nice if they'd left the plate for me on Thursday though.

that looks like the barriers they errect for racing car events ...how do they expect you to get on and off your drive then .perhaps they think your car owns a set of wings

I think they thought it wouldn't be an inconvenience to reverse out of my driveway and onto my front lawn, and then rallycross to my neighbour's driveway, dodging trees and rockeries and shrubs and half-buried stumps of long-dead trees while I did so....

City works are the same all over the world :-(

Some years ago, the city repaved my street, including the curbs.

I couldn't park in my driveway for a solid three weeks!
miwahnimiwahni on November 10th, 2014 12:00 pm (UTC)
Three weeks?! Now THAT's inconvenience! I shall shut up and be grateful. *g*

I guess we were lucky it was summer (can't leave a car on the street during winter if there's any chance of snow).

Three weeks might be an exaggeration; I don't quite remember the duration, but it was more than a few days since they paved the entire street, redid the curbs, and had to put the driveways exactly as they were before.

It was too long :-(

Oh gawd! What a mess! They really should not block off your driveway like that without putting in some sort of ramp for your use.

Hope they are working over the weekend to fix it.
miwahnimiwahni on November 10th, 2014 12:01 pm (UTC)
A ramp would have been nice, yeah. When I got home on Friday night they had a little bobcat thing and were busily filling the hole, but it was done in such a slapdash manner (dirt piled up with large rock-bits on top) that I wasn't going to chance driving out and having it sink beneath the weight of my car. I continued to use my neighbour's driveway when I had to go out last night.
