Stuff I Love - Zines
I know the world is moving on but zines will always be very special to me. The first zines I ever laid my hands on were Beyond Antares, Star Trek zines published by Susan Clarke in the early eighties, and they're also the first zines I ever contributed to which makes them particularly precious to me.

While the net has made fandom - and fan fic- more accessible, I do miss the excitement of seeing the parcel in the letterbox, and opening it to see the cover (so many had fantastic cover art!) then eking it out, a story at a time, to make it last... then there were always, in the older zines, the letters of comment about previous issues which were a treat to read.

I still occasionally print out a longer story, and bind it to keep, but more often than not I'll just download to my kindle, and where's the fun in that? The anticipation, the excitement? I love the ready availability of fic now though, and am grateful because with postage rates as high as they are I can't often stretch to buying another zine. I know there are download alternatives but nothing beats having the finished product in your hands.

Zines were the way to go, back in the days when zines were all we had... but even after the rise of the web there are a few zines that are classics. I have two SH ones that I treasure - Evolution by Dana Austen Marsh, with the most gorgeous artwork by Lorraine Brevig - this is actually a two-parter, being too long for just one zine, and Murder on San Carmelitas by Lynna Bright. And then there's Total Eclipse of the Heart by Flamingo, which I printed out and bound because it's long and angsty and if it ever disappeared from the net I'd be that upset. Old zine habits die hard!

I know I really should print out some of my favs, like "Decorated for Death" and "The Thousandth Man."

Do it, just in case. Which reminds me - I need to grab "Crab Sandwiches" in case it ever disappears. I'm sure there'll be a day when I feel like a good crying jag.
